if osler didn't say it, we don't care and neither should you
why the dish washing doctor?
I got my start washing dishes in restaurants: portioning pasta, cleaning floors, peeling onions and taking out the trash. I was soaked in water from the moment my shift began to when I punched out. I eventually worked my way onto the line, tossing a few salads and slinging pasta. At some point I tried to make a go of cooking, getting some formal training in French cooking, but I always wanted to be a doctor. I learned that food can cure and it can kill: the people cooking your food have underappreciated responsibility to you. Even though we were cooking healthy, high quality food it still wasn't enough for me. One dreary day while eating gourmet spider-man KD in a small flat in England, I decided to roll up my knives for good and picked up a scalpel (I'm not actually into surgery I just wanted to be dramatic)
In medicine not all of your healthcare professionals have worked outside of healthcare. Doctors learn their own language, a complex intertwining of shorthand and Latin weaved in history and pomp (it's also super important to be able to communicate with our colleagues). Whether it is working in a restaurant, retail, factory or mine, or in an office - it's unlikely your doctor has done anything other than ... doctor. Sometimes it can be hard to translate evidence based medicine into terms we can use around our kitchen table. In this podcast, we do just that. Enjoy.
